Patients entitled to NHS care retain the full rights and privileges of an NHS patient despite consulting with a Private GP (this is the case all over the UK).
These rights, ingrained in the NHS constitution have been legally tested on many occasions (you may remember the furore surrounding patients topping up their care for cancer treatment and medication).
The NHS subsequently clarified the position of NHS patients and the interface between NHS and private care.
When you consult our Doctor, you pay for your consultation. You will also be required to cover the cost of any medication dispensed by us or at the pharmacy. These costs are kept to a minimum and usually cost less than £5. If you wish any special services e.g. procedures and operations these attract an additional fee to cover training, costs and insurance.
In terms of onward referral and further care, as an NHS patient you retain the right to be referred for NHS care by our Private Doctor. This includes (but is not restricted to) urgent admission to hospital, any out-patient referral to the hospital, any investigation at the hospital e.g. x-ray, ultrasound, scan or any blood test that we send. To do this we need access to your H+C Number.
Of course, you may request to be referred or investigated Privately. This is at your discretion. Our Doctor will advise you on the most cost effective and sensible way to maximise your Healthcare journey.
NOTE: From 1st February 2018 we must have access to your H+C number to send any referral or investigation on your behalf to the NHS. You will find your H+C number on your NHS Healthcard. It will also be on any official documentation from your GP Surgery, Hospital Letter or communication from NHS/BSO Northern Ireland. This is a 10 digit number. If you do not have this number it can be obtained by requesting it, IN PERSON, from your local NHS GP surgery. It can also be requested during opening hours from BSO Belfast on 0300 555 0113.
