As exciting as going away is, it’s important to take extra care to maintain your health when away from home. Not only will this mean you can enjoy your trip to its full extent, but you can also return home feeling more refreshed and revived.

If you’re a travel addict like us, read on for some of our favourite tried-and-tested healthy travel tips:

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Let’s face it, most of us don’t drink nearly enough water every day. While this may be less of an issue in our daily lives, you’ll feel the effects of dehydration more when you travel.

From the moment you get on the plane, try to remember to hydrate regularly. Drinking extra water is also a good idea while on the trip as your body adjusts to a different climate.

Eat fresh produce at least once a day

Travel usually involves lots of eating out, while we tend to eat more fruit and veg at home. Make it a point to consume a fresh and wholesome food item at least once a day so you’re not just consuming restaurant food.

Take healthy snacks on the go

If your trip involves lots of day trips and excursions, take a bag of healthy goodies along to fuel yourself on the go. Nuts, fruits and healthy bars are perfect for keeping your energy levels up so you can focus purely on taking in the sights.

Walk around as much as you can

While you probably won’t be in the mood for hitting the gym, keep your cardiovascular activity up by walking where you can. Try and base yourself somewhere where there are things to explore on foot. You’ll get to experience more of the area by walking and you’ll maintain your physical fitness. Aim for at least 10,000 steps a day, if not more.

If you can’t walk anywhere, incorporate some other movement into your day. Swimming or hiking are great ways to enjoy nature on your travels while keeping fit.

Get your travel vaccines sorted in time

Not sure which vaccines you should get? At Duality Health, we offer travel consultations to advise you on which vaccinations you need for your destination.

Create a comfortable sleeping environment

While it’s probably true that there’s a lot to see and do, don’t exhaust yourself trying to pack too much in. You don’t want to come back from your trip in need of another holiday just to recover! Get enough sleep by creating a comfortable sleeping environment for yourself wherever you’re staying.

Use an eye mask and earplugs if all else fails. With enough shut-eye every night, you’ll be able to enjoy your travels a lot more and return home feeling refreshed.
